Anna Tyler on how to transform a shop-bought wedding cake
"I’ve bought a plain white tiered cake and I want to decorate it myself to save money, but I’m not sure how I go about doing it. Do you have any tips?"
Anna says: There are so many ways to dress up a plain white cake, but you first need to decide what you want the end look to be. Is your wedding traditional? Fun and quirky? Glamorous?
A simple bow is the perfect way to finish off a cake of any size. Try using a ribbon that complements your wedding colours and wrap it around the base of the tiers, securing it with a pearl-head pin at the back. Tie a bow around the top tier leaving the bow legs to fall down the front. Then, for an extra touch of glamour, attach a brooch to the centre of the bow.
Alternatively, a few large-headed flowers will have real impact. Ask your florist to put something together to match your bouquet to sit on the top tier. It you want something a bit different, adorn your cake with your favourite sweets for a fun, cost-effective result.
