How do men decide when it’s time to propose? We talk to 11 fellas about the instant they knew they wanted to get married. Hankies at the ready…

“We met at uni so marriage was pretty far from our minds back then, but after a few years together it was obvious we were going to be together for a very long time. Cath is one of the most thoughtful people I know, and makes me laugh every day!”
Chris Dean

“We were out for dinner just a couple of months into dating, when Gabi was laughing and smiling and I just thought ‘I’m going to marry you one day’. I had goosebumps down my arms and a shiver down my spine (in a good way!). A couple of years later I asked the question, and we’ve never looked back.”
Chris Sheen

“From the moment we met we hated being apart, so I moved cities to be with Kelly. Marriage was just the final piece in the puzzle. I already knew I had met my soulmate so it was a matter of ‘when’. not ‘if’. The decision to ask Kelly to marry me was almost a snap one as I booked a trip to Venice for her birthday and thought this would be the place to do it. I proposed in St Mark’s Square early in the morning, to avoid getting too embarassed!”
Gavin Relph

“I wanted to marry Charlie after our second date – I knew I couldn’t live without her infectious smile and laugh! When you feel 100 percent at ease with someone, you’ve found ‘the one’.”
Pete Rowley

“With Sam, I’ve found someone who wants the same things as me, to go on the same adventures and dance as badly/enthusiastically as me. Instead of restricting each other we encourage each other. We have each other’s back, no matter what. When I saw her hurtling down a zip wire at Adrenaline Gorge, I thought ‘She’s the one!’”
Tristan Webb

“For me it wasn’t a sudden decision, but a realisation that we were going to be together, no matter what. I knew getting married was going to be a wonderful way of celebrating the years we’d spent together, our amazing relationship and the future.”
Adam Millbank

“We went to New York together; who could fail to fall in love there?!  on our third day I proposed with a Haribo ring and the rest is history!”
Matt Bartlett

“There was no exact ‘moment’ when I knew I wanted to marry Julie. It was a growing feeling from early on in our relationship – I was beginning not to be able to imagine a life without her. She’s a remarkable woman and I am the luckiest guy. We now look forward to our wedding together this October.”
Alex Minton

“Without realising it, I was planning my future for kids, a home, growing old together... and Sarah was the one I pictured by my side. It’s the easiest decision I ever made  – marrying my best friend!”
Karl Muncila

“When Fliss walked in and I saw her for the first time, I definitely had that warm, fuzzy feeling. By date number three I knew I wanted to be with her, so although I don’t remember the exact time I thought ‘I want to marry her’, looking back it would have been then!”
Andy Concannon

“We were at a Libertines gig and When The Lights Go Out came on – she held my hand and I knew for sure I’d found my best friend for life.”
Lewis D’Hass
