Hen parties are no longer just L-plates and willy straws – there are plenty of brilliant ideas for brides-to-be who want something a bit different for their last night of freedom. Here are some of our unusual hen party favourites...

1. Dance like Beyoncé
We’ve all had that moment when we’re convinced the gawps we’re getting on the dance floor are down to our striking resemblance to Mrs Carter, so why not make the dream a reality with a Beyoncé dance class?

2. Go outdoors
If your hens are more A-Team than Pussycat Dolls, why not take them on an intrepid canyoning adventure? There’s a whole range of outdoorsy activities ranging from raft building and kayaking to quad biking and surfing out there.

3. Gatsby
Brides planning a vintage-style wedding can carry the theme all the way through to their hen do with 1920s Charleston dance classes. A two-hour class will teach you and your hens a choreographed routine, and you can follow it up with afternoon tea, or a vintage makeover and photo shoot. Woop!

4. Get in the driving seat
Forget cocktails and cupcakes – give your hens an experience to remember with 4x4 off-road adventure challenge with outdoor company Kankku! Hen groups have to work together to find their way around a challenging off-road trail in the Lake District, and anyone with a driving licence can get behind the wheel. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but your day doesn’t have to be completely action-packed – tailor your experience to include a relaxing pub lunch to take the drama down a notch.

5. Going Japanese
Give your girls a dose of culture with a Japanese-themed kimono party. Takayo provides beautiful traditional kimonos and antique Japanese hair ornaments so everybody looks the part and you’ll learn how to write your name in Kanji on paper fans. You can also add on a sushi-making class if you want.

6. The sky’s the limit
Get – quite literally – carried away with an indoor skydiving experience at iFly UK’s centres in Basingstoke, Manchester and Milton Keynes. Take it in turns to step into the wind tunnel and experience the equivalent of a 12,000ft skydive. Fully qualified instructors are on-hand to make sure you get the most out of the experience.

7. Take a punt
If you’re looking for a more refined hen do, take your girls punting down the rivers of Cambridge – champagne in hand of course! Enjoy the scenery as you cruise around the backwaters of the city’s famous colleges. It’s a great activity for hens with mums or pregnant guests in tow, and would be perfect followed by a refined afternoon tea.

8. Beer spa
For a spa trip with a tasty twist, why not fly to the Czech Republic and visit the country’s first beer spa? After a tour of the Chodovar brewery, you and your hens can relax in a hot beer bath (with a glass to fill from the cold beer tap!) before getting massages and hot grain packs.

9. Zombie apocalypse
You’ve survived the wedding planning process with your hens – why not try surviving a zombie apocalypse with them too? Zed Events runs zombie survival events in spooky locations like abandoned manors and shopping malls, and gives you all the weapons, protective gear and training you’ll need for a truly thrilling hen do!

10. Circus skills
If your girls are up for trying something new and exciting, a circus skills workshop might be the perfect day out for your hen party. Aerial Edge can give you all a taster session in acrobatics, teaching you the basics of trapeze, aerial silks and hoops – clowns need not apply!

11. Mansion murder mystery
If you love your Agatha Christie novels or you’re glued to the telly when Sherlock comes on, why not try a murder mystery weekend in a stunning mansion or castle? Smoke and Mirrors creates interactive mysteries for you and your hens to solve over the course of the weekend, and it’s up to you whether the story is silly or spooky.

12. Sex and the City tour in New York
For brides who aren’t afraid to splash the cash, a shopping trip to New York can be ideal, especially if you try the Sex and the City tour around Manhattan. Follow in the footsteps of Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda and Carrie as you visit various film locations from the iconic TV show, stopping only for cocktails and cupcakes.
