Your dream trip doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg...

1) Go off the beaten track
Choose locations that aren't the obvious choice, as they're likely to be cheaper. Instead of popular Caribbean destinations like Jamaica, St Lucia and Barbados, consider less obvious ones such as the Dominican Republic (excellent for watersports) or Trinidad & Tobago.

2) Shop around
Look around for the best prices on flights. Many smaller airlines will offer better deals, but due to the way their routes work, you could still end up flying with a larger airline on longer routes.

3) What about a package?
Consider packages, even if you don't want to stay in the resort on offer. Some holiday companies will offer package deals to Caribbean destinations that work out cheaper than paying for flights alone, so you'll have more to spend on accommodation.

4) Pick your moment

Don't travel during peak times. School holidays, Easter and Christmas are always more expensive, but prices will also vary during the year depending on the climate of your destination. The Caribbean is best during the UK's winter and spring, but travelling just before the rainy season kicks in can be much cheaper.

5) Be adventurous
Be prepared to do something a bit different. If you can't afford to fly first class around Europe, why not buy rail tickets and spend some time travelling around, or try a working holiday in Africa rather than the traditional safari.
