With the promise of beautiful scenery and warm sunshine just a few hours way from the UK, we can see why the Amalfi Coast in Italy is a top minimoon spot. It’s one of those destinations that you have a vivid idea of in your mind, thanks to the wealth of amazing images online, but even those incredible, iconic photos don't show quite how special it actually is.
Travelling to the hotel along the winding coastal roads was an adventure in itself. Around every twist and turn there's was a new view even more beautiful than the last – then we pulled up to the most stunning place of them all, our home for the weekend, Hotel Santa Caterina. The hotel has a 100-year history of being a family-run business with fantastic customer service and that was clearly evident when we walked in to be greeted as though we were old-time friends. The reception is strikingly beautiful and the floral floor tiles are the first thing to catch my eye – this is the moment I started to fall in love with the hotel’s interiors. Its traditional Italian charm is perfectly blended with luxury touches to give it a five-star feel, but with no pretence at all.
Pretty Positano views
As beautiful as the hotel is, nothing beats the magical view from the restaurant balcony that sweeps across the azure waters and charming coastline. Below us are the blooming hotel gardens, which are filled with fruitful lemon and trees. Later we would learn that Italians utilise the lemon in every way they can, creating everything from the legendary limoncello to light, fluffy cakes – we even sampled a lemon pasta dish (lemon tagliolini) which was so delicious! As well as in the kitchen, lemons are used in the boutique, tranquil spa to rejuvenate and detox tired skin during a massage.
13 REALLY GOOD REASONS TO HAVE A MINIMOON
Exploring the hotel, it’s hard to believe that it started with only six rooms and now it’s expanded to hold 67 rooms and suites. Because of the landscape, the hotel is built upon many levels, making it a wondrous maze with beauty around every corner – there are so many cosy nooks and secluded spots to spend some peaceful time as a couple. The resort is home to two honeymoon suites with private, secluded pools if you're looking to really luxe out – however, our Deluxe Double Room was more than enough to be impressed by, with elegant furnishes, a private balcony and panoramic sea views.
Our luxury yacht awaits
We can't talk about Italy without mentioning the food. We sampled so many courses of authentic, homemade Italian cuisine in the elegant Restaurant Santa Caterina – fresh fish, tasty cheese and rich wines (what more could you want?). As well as wining and dining, we were also lucky enough to take a trip on a private 18-meter yacht during our stay. We spent a few hours feeling like celebrities, cruising around all of the beautiful bays. Absorbing the postcard-like views of Positino while sipping on a glass of prosecco was like a dream come true. To describe the Amalfi Coast as picturesque would be a huge understatement – there are so many photo opportunities you just don’t know where to start – if you're not capturing the cascading houses upon the cliffs then you'll be snapping the calm, crystal waters. We spent our last day chilling at the hotel’s beach club – only moving to take a dip in the saltwater pool to cool off. Positioned down by the water’s edge, this sunbathing hotspot is the perfect place to relax and unwind with your new husband.
