Visit Europe for a dream short-haul honeymoon

Don’t have the budget for long-haul honeymoon? These European destinations are a stylish alternative for saving time and money.

Côte D’azur, France
If your dream honeymoon wardrobe is part Brigitte Bardot, part Grace Kelly, then your honeymoon has to involve a road trip along the French Riviera. Take in the spectacular coastal views from Monaco, Nice, Cannes and St Tropez, then head inland to Grasse, famed for its perfume production, and explore the cobbled streets of the Old Town of Antibes before visiting the Musée Picasso.
Don’t miss: Forget a sensible hire car – pick up a vintage convertible to recreate Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.
Book it! Save the luxury for when you arrive; fly Easyjet to Nice from London from £29.99. Flights take around two hours. There are plenty of fabulous hotels to choose from: find contemporary cool at Kube Hotel, St Tropez (from £222) and Mediterranean chic at Tiara Yaktsa in Cannes (from £170), both mrandmrssmith.com.

WHERE TO GO ON HONEYMOON WHEN

Istanbul, Turkey
Bridging the gap between east and west, Istanbul only just sneaks into our pick of European hotspots as it straddles both Europe and Asia. Enjoy the melting pot of cultures, and explore the city’s many mosques and cathedrals. When you’ve had your fix of sightseeing, cross the Bosphorus to visit the Asian side of the city, and practise your haggling skills at the Grand Bazaar.
Don’t miss: The sunset across the Galata Bridge – it’s a perfect spot to see night fall over Istanbul’s dramatic skyline.
Book it! BA flights to Istanbul cost from £99, and take around three hours 45 minutes. Check into The House Galatasaray, a 19th century Ottoman mansion, for a super relaxing stay; rooms from £62.

LITERATURE INSPIRED HONEYMOONS

Bilbao & San Sebastian, Spain
For fabulous food and culture on tap, head to Bilbao in northern Spain. It’s home to the Guggenheim museum, and once you’ve had your fix of fine art, you can head into the Old Town for pintxos – Basque-region tapas. After a couple of days in Bilbao, make the trip to neighbouring San Sebastian. It’s a tiny town with a big appetite, as it’s home to some of the world’s most renowned restaurants.
Don’t miss: Blow the budget (and pre-wedding diet) at 2* Mugaritz, one of San Sebastian’s many Michelin-rated restaurants.
Book it! Easyjet fly to Bilbao from Stansted from £16.99; flights take under two hours. Double rooms at the Miro Hotel in Bilbao cost from £78, while rooms at romantic Hotel Villa Soro cost from £92 (i-escape.com).
