Any one else doing it overseas?

Postby Barbados Bride » Mon Jan 23, 2012 11:13 pm

Hi all

Thought I would get the ball rolling on a couple of these. Anyone out there tying the knot abroad? My fiance and I are planning a Barbados wedding as that is where his family are from. Would be interested to hear if there are any others out there x

Oh wow, Malta is meant to be beautiful!

My fiance has family in Barbados plus I do know the island pretty well myself so I think we are going to, by and large, do it ourselves with help from his relatives. My feel would be, it depends on what is important to you. For me, it is having the right venue and a gorgeous dress. I don't really care about flowers and table decorations and the like so for me a planner is not massively important- we are probably going for a hotel where they will have an onsite planner. If you are a bride that places a lot of importance on the details (and that is a totally valid wedding choice, bride your own way) then you may well need the support of a planner because otherwise it is going to be a job of work sourcing everything you need.

Why Malta? Any particular connection or just because it looks awesome?

If you are going to be traveling overseas for a destination wedding, it is important to remember that you will need to bring your passport with you. If you are wondering how long does it take to get a passport, the answer is it depends. Depending on what type of passport service you are trying to get determines the length of time it takes. However, with the help of internet passport agencies, getting a passport service, such as a name change in passport, does not take long at all. Online passport agencies are able to quickly and effectively help you take care of all your passport needs.

Thanks for that. I must remember not to travel to my overseas wedding without...my passport.

char12 - it's hard isn't it when you can't get an idea of the venue! I'd do some research around hotels and resorts, as lots of them will have on-site wedding planners who can help you to organise your wedding there. Some will even throw in a wedding package for free if you're staying there for a certain number of nights (usually at least 7). What kind of wedding do you have in mind? A beach, or more of a villa or hotel setting?

Kate, it's usually cheaper to get married overseas, mostly because people tend to have far fewer guests. Lots of Caribbean hotels include a free wedding package in the price of a fortnight's holiday, which makes it a good value way to work your wedding and honeymoon into one.
